Trần Thánh Tông was a great leader in Đại Việt. He was born in 1240. He became the second emperor of the Trần ruling family. He ruled from 1258 to 1278. Later, he became a retired emperor.

By December 1257, they had brought peace back to the land. Thánh Tông and his father worked together to keep the country strong. 
Thánh Tông also had to deal with the Yuan dynasty. This was a strong group from the north. In 1268, an official named Zhang Tingzhen came to the capital, Thăng Long. He brought a message from Kublai Khan. The king stood up to receive it instead of bowing low. This caused a tense moment between the king and the official. Later, the Yuan leaders made many demands. They wanted copper columns and for the king to visit them. Thánh Tông refused these requests to protect his land. 
As a retired emperor, he helped win even more wars. In 1284, the second Mongol invasion began. It was a very hard time for the people. Some members of the royal family even joined the enemy. Despite this, the leaders stayed united and determined. They worked with brave generals like Trần Hưng Đạo. The people won big battles at Hàm Tử and Chương Dương. A final big victory happened at the Battle of Bạch Đằng in 1288. This helped bring a long period of peace to Đại Việt.

Thánh Tông also managed difficult relationships with the Yuan dynasty. In 1269, an official named Zhang Tingzhen arrived in the capital, Thăng Long. Zhang brought an edict from Kublai Khan. Instead of kowtowing, which means bowing low to the ground, Thánh Tông stood to receive it. This caused a tense confrontation between the king and the official. The Yuan court later made many demands. They asked for lost copper columns and for the king to visit Dadu. Thánh Tông refused these requests to protect his sovereignty.
After his father died in 1277, Thánh Tông became the sole ruler. He held this position for only one year. In 1278, he passed the throne to his son, Trần Nhân Tông. As a retired emperor, he remained a supreme commander during the next two wars. In 1282, he and the new emperor met with the Trần clan at Bình Than. They discussed the unavoidable threat of war. This meeting helped organize the military defense of the nation.
The second Mongol invasion began in December 1284. The Yuan forces attacked from two different directions. Toghan led the infantry from the northern border. Meanwhile, General Sogetu led a navy through southern territory. The war was very difficult for the Trần dynasty. Some family members, including the emperor's brother Trần Ích Tắc, defected to the Yuan. Despite these betrayals, the leaders remained determined. They won critical victories at the Battles of Hàm Tử and Chương Dương.
The third Mongol invasion occurred in March 1287. This time, the commander-in-chief, Trần Quốc Tuấn, was confident. The Đại Việt military successfully broke the Yuan campaign. A major turning point was the Battle of Bạch Đằng on March 8, 1288. In this battle, the Yuan navy suffered a disastrous defeat. Other successes included the destruction of logistics at the Battle of Vân Đồn. These victories ended the threat and brought peace.
Thánh Tông's reign left a lasting impact on Vietnamese history. He balanced the need for strong military defense with civil growth. He reformed the social system by having royals hire the poor to work their land. He also reorganized the military to improve efficiency. By managing both the court and the battlefield, he helped establish a long era of stability. His ability to lead through both peace and war remains a central part of his legacy.
