He is recognized for creating complex stories for both the theater and the cinema. His work often explores deep social, political, and historical themes. Kushner is a rare figure in the entertainment industry. He is among the few writers to achieve a "grand slam" of major American awards. He has earned nominations for an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. This achievement demonstrates his versatility across different types of storytelling.

Kushner's creative process is defined by long periods of development and frequent revision. He does not rush his writing; instead, he allows his works to mature over many years. For example, his play *The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures* began as a novel. He worked on this project for more than a decade before its 2009 premiere. He is also known for revising plays even after they are published. His famous work, *Angels in America: Perestroika*, was significantly revised after its initial release. Kushner has noted that the original script for that play was nearly double its theatrical length.

His most influential stage work is the epic play *Angels in America*. This work is divided into two parts: *Millennium Approaches* and *Perestroika*. The play serves as a seven-hour exploration of the AIDS epidemic in New York during the Reagan era. It premiered at the Eureka Theatre in 1991 before moving to major venues like the Royal National Theatre and Broadway. The play brought Kushner immense critical success. *Millennium Approaches* won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Additionally, both parts won consecutive Tony Awards for Best Play in 1993 and 1994.

Kushner's career also includes significant work in musical theater and television. In 2003, he wrote the book and lyrics for the musical *Caroline, or Change*. This production earned him Tony Award nominations for both Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. A 2021 Broadway revival of this musical later earned him a Grammy Award nomination. He also adapted *Angels in America* into a television miniseries for HBO. This adaptation won him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series or Movie.

Kushner's life and education provided a foundation for his artistic interests. He was born in Manhattan in 1956 to a family of musicians. His mother, Sylvia, was a bassoonist, and his father, William, was a clarinetist and conductor. His family is Jewish, with roots in Russia and Poland. After moving to Lake Charles, Louisiana, during his childhood, he became active in policy debate. He later returned to New York to study Medieval studies at Columbia University. He eventually graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU in 1984.

In recent decades, Kushner has become a frequent collaborator with director Steven Spielberg.

Together, they have worked on several major motion pictures. These include the historical drama *Munich* (2005) and the biographical film *Lincoln* (2012). They also collaborated on the musical film *West Side Story* (2021) and the semi-autobiographical *The Fabelmans* (2022). His work with Spielberg has resulted in four Academy Award nominations. These nominations cover categories such as Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Screenplay.

Kushner's public life has sometimes been marked by political controversy. His views regarding the Israeli government and its treatment of Palestinians have drawn criticism. This led to a dispute at the City University of New York (CUNY) in 2011. The university's Board of Trustees initially voted to remove his name from an honorary degree list. However, the decision was reversed after significant debate and support from faculty. Despite these tensions, Kushner's contributions to the arts remain highly valued. In 2013, President Barack Obama presented him with the National Medal of Arts to honor his impact on American culture.
