He also leads the Skatepark Project, which builds skateparks in underprivileged areas around the world. His life demonstrates how a personal passion can transform into a global cultural impact.

Hawk's path to professional skating began with a gift from his older brother when he was nine years old. He spent his early years practicing at the Oasis Skatepark in California. By age 12, he was already winning amateur competitions. He turned professional at the young age of 14. During his youth, Hawk was described as hyperactive, and his parents encouraged skateboarding as an outlet for his energy.

Vertical skateboarding, or "vert" skating, involves performing maneuvers on large, curved ramps. Hawk became a master of this discipline, inventing over 100 different tricks. These include the backside Ollie to tail, the varial, the frontside hurricane, the rodeo flip, the stalefish, and the Ollie 540. He also pioneered late-grab airs, a technique that some early professionals initially criticized. His ability to innovate technical movements helped define the modern era of the sport.

One of the most significant moments in skateboarding history occurred on June 27, 1999. During the X Games, Hawk became the first person to land a "900." This complex trick requires the skater to complete two-and-a-half full revolutions in the air. It took him twelve attempts to successfully land the maneuver.

Following this achievement, Hawk retired from professional competition in 2003, though he would make occasional appearances in later years. He even successfully performed a 900 again at age 48 in 2016.

Hawk's competitive record is statistically remarkable. He participated in 103 professional contests throughout his career. Of those, he won 73 contests and finished in second place 19 times. He also held the title of National Skateboard Association vert skating world champion for 12 consecutive years from 1984 to 1996. At the X Games, he earned a total of 10 gold medals, including a "perfect run" score of 97.50 in 1995.

Beyond the ramps, Hawk has built a massive commercial legacy. In 1999, the video game series "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" debuted, published by Activision. This series has since expanded to 18 different titles, including ten main-series games.

Hawk's influence extends to mentorship and cultural milestones. He mentored the young Shaun White, helping him become a professional skater at age 16 and later an Olympic gold medalist. In 2009, Hawk made history by skateboarding on the White House grounds during a Father's Day celebration for President Barack Obama.
