Tony Curtis was a prolific American actor.
His journey began with a difficult childhood in Manhattan.
Curtis followed a specific path to reach Hollywood. He first joined the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific submarine force. He worked aboard the USS Proteus, a submarine tender. On September 2, 1945, he witnessed the Japanese surrender. After the war, he used the G.I. Bill for college. He studied acting at The New School in Greenwich Village. He trained under the German director Erwin Piscator. Later, talent agent Joyce Selznick discovered him.
He arrived in Hollywood in 1948 at age 23.
