His father, Jozef, was a Slovak man who worked as a carter. His mother, Teresie, was a Moravian woman who worked as a cook. Masaryk studied very hard in school in Brno and Vienna. He earned a doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1876. Later, he became a professor of philosophy in Prague.
His life changed when a big war began. 
In 1918, Masaryk took a very important trip to America. He went with two partners named Edvard Beneš and Milan Rastislav Štefánik. They met with President Woodrow Wilson in the United States. Their work led to the Washington Declaration. This document said that a new state called Czechoslovakia should exist. Because of this, the new country was finally recognized by other nations. Masaryk was then chosen to lead the new government.
Masaryk served as the first president of Czechoslovakia. He held this job from 1918 until 1935. He was reelected three different times by the people. During his time in office, he helped the country become a strong democracy. He eventually stepped down because he was getting older. He moved to a quiet village called Lány. He died there in 1937 at the age of 87. His life helped change the map of Europe forever.

He earned a doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1876. He also studied in Leipzig with famous scholars. Later, he became a professor of philosophy at Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague.
His early political career focused on reforming the existing empire. He served in the Austrian Reichsrat between 1891 and 1893. He also served there from 1907 to 1914. During this time, he belonged to the Czech Progressive Party. He initially wanted to turn the Austro-Hungarian Empire into a federal state. However, the outbreak of World War I in 1914 changed his goals. He decided that Czech and Slovak independence was necessary. He went into exile in December 1914 to organize this cause.
During his exile, Masaryk traveled across the globe. He visited Western Europe, the Russian Empire, Japan, and the United States. He worked to build connections that would support a new nation. In London, he even opened an office in Piccadilly Circus. The office featured maps and slogans to attract public interest. He also helped establish the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia. This was a military force that fought against the Central Powers. By 1918, the legion had grown to about 40,000 members. 
In 1918, Masaryk led a diplomatic mission to the United States. 
Masaryk became the head of the provisional government in late 1918. He was formally elected president in November of that year. He was subsequently reelected three more times. 
Masaryk eventually resigned from the presidency in 1935 due to old age. Edvard Beneš succeeded him as president. Masaryk retired to the village of Lány.
