He often portrays characters that are brooding, intense, or psychologically complex. This means his roles often require deep emotional work to show a character's internal struggles. Hardy has worked extensively in both independent films and major studio productions. His career spans film, television, and live stage performances in Britain and America. For his contributions to drama, he was appointed a CBE in the 2018 Birthday Honours.

Hardy's professional journey began with formal training in the dramatic arts. He attended several schools, including Tower House School and Reed's School. He later studied at Richmond Drama School and the Drama Centre London. While at drama school, he admired the actor Gary Oldman. Hardy even mirrored scenes from Oldman to improve his own craft. Before acting, he briefly entered the modeling industry. In 1998, he won "The Big Breakfast Find Me a Supermodel" competition. This victory earned him a short contract with the agency Models 1.

His early acting career involved a mix of television and film roles. In 2001, he made his feature film debut in the war thriller Black Hawk Down. That same year, he appeared in the HBO-BBC miniseries Band of Brothers. During his youth, Hardy also explored music as a rapper. He and his friend Edward Tracy recorded a mixtape titled Falling On Your Arse in 1999. This recording remained unreleased for nearly two decades until 2018. He also earned a London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer in 2003.

Hardy's filmography includes several high-profile collaborations with director Christopher Nolan. He appeared in the science fiction thriller Inception in 2010. He also played the villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. In 2017, he portrayed a Royal Air Force fighter pilot in Dunkirk.

His ability to handle intense roles led to major successes. In 2015, he starred as Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road. That film grossed over US$378 million against a $150 million budget. He also played both Kray twins in the crime film Legend.

Television has provided Hardy with many opportunities to showcase his range. He is well known for his role as Alfie Solomons in the crime drama Peaky Blinders. This character is a gang leader based in Camden Town. Hardy also helped create the historical fiction miniseries Taboo in 2017. He co-produced this series alongside his father, Edward "Chips" Hardy. His television work also includes historical dramas like The Virgin Queen and Oliver Twist. These roles allow him to explore different time periods and social settings.

Hardy has also embraced roles in superhero and comic book cinema. In 2018, he starred in the film Venom as Eddie Brock. This character is part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe. He returned for the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and co-wrote the story.

Personal challenges have also shaped Hardy's life and perspective. During his youth, he struggled with alcohol and crack cocaine use. He used these substances to cope with stress and experienced bouts of dysthymia. Dysthymia is a type of long-term depression. Hardy sought help at a rehabilitation center in 2003 to regain control. Today, he uses his platform to support charitable causes. He serves as an ambassador for the Prince's Trust, which supports youth development. He and his wife, Charlotte Riley, also act as patrons for Bowel Cancer UK.
