Toluca, officially known as Toluca de Lerdo, is the capital city of the State of Mexico. It serves as the seat of the Municipality of Toluca. The city is a central part of the Greater Toluca metropolitan area. This large urban region has a combined population of 2,347,692 people. This makes it the fifth most populous metropolitan area in Mexico. The city sits southwest of Mexico City. Its rapid growth is largely due to its close proximity to the national capital.

The geography of the region is defined by its high altitude. Toluca is located at 2,600 meters above sea level. This elevation makes it the highest capital city in North America. Because of this height, the city has a temperate subhumid climate. This means the weather stays relatively cool throughout the year. In the spring and summer, average temperatures range from 6 to 25 degrees Celsius. During the winter, temperatures can drop from 20 degrees Celsius down to −5 degrees Celsius. Most of the annual rainfall occurs during the summer months between June and September.

The history of the valley involves many different groups of people. In ancient times, the Matlatzinco Valley was home to the Matlatzinca, Otomi, Mazahua, and Nahua peoples. The Matlatzincas originally called the area Nepintahihui, which means "land of corn." In 1478, the Mexica emperor Axayacatl conquered the valley. The Aztecs later renamed the area Tollocan. This name comes from the god Tolo and a suffix meaning "place of." Some Aztec records call it Tolutépetl, or "hill of the god Tolo." After the Spanish conquest in 1521, the name changed to Toluca. In 1861, the city adopted the name Toluca de Lerdo to honor President Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada.

Toluca has evolved from an ancient settlement into a major industrial hub. In the colonial period, the area was known for producing smoked and cured meats like chorizo. However, the economy expanded significantly during the 20th century. Intense industrialization began in the 1950s and continued through the 1980s. Today, the city is a major industrial zone due to its central location. It possesses a good level of infrastructure to support this industry. The Toluca International Airport is a key piece of this infrastructure. It is often seen as a way to relieve pressure on Mexico City.

Nature and landmarks provide important cultural and recreational value to the city. The Nevado de Toluca, or Xinantécatl, is a large volcano located southwest of the city. Its crater is shaped like a sleeping man, which gave it the name Xinantecatl. It is the only volcano in Mexico that allows people to drive a car into its crater. The volcano features two lagoons where people can practice fishing or scuba-diving. The Nevado de Toluca National Park was established in 1936. This park contains forests of pine and fir trees. Visitors might see animals like eagles, squirrels, and tlacuaches in this area.

Sports and culture are also very important to the people of Toluca. The Deportivo Toluca Fútbol Club is the city's largest sports institution. The men's club was founded on February 12, 1917, and joined the Liga MX in 1954. They play at the Estadio Nemesio Diez, which holds 30,000 spectators. A professional women's team, Deportivo Toluca Femenil, has also competed in the Liga MX Femenil since 2017. For culture, the city offers the Cosmovitral botanical garden and the Alfeñique Fair. The Alfeñique Fair takes place during the annual Day of the Dead festival.

Modern development continues to shape how people move through the region. Plans are underway for the "El Insurgente" interurban train. This train will eventually link Toluca with Mexico City. It will have a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour and a length of 58 km. Additionally, the city is promoting urban cycling. This follows an agreement with the United Nations Organization to use bicycles as sustainable mass transportation. These changes aim to improve how the growing population travels between the valley and the capital.
