They lived in cities near the Tarim Basin. This area is in modern China. These cities were part of the Silk Road. This was a famous trade route.

The Tocharians spoke two related languages. We call them Tocharian A and Tocharian B.

They used a script to write. This script looked like writing from India. Most of their papers were found in Buddhist monasteries. These papers tell us they followed Buddhism.

They made beautiful art too. Many paintings showed stories about the Buddha.

One large city was named Kucha. The kings there had special titles. They even called themselves "Sons of God."

Over time, things began to change. New groups of people moved into the area. By the 9th century, the Tocharian languages were gone. But their stories and art remain for us to find.
