Music has a beat.

Two numbers show the beat. They sit on top of each other.

The top number tells you how to count. It says how many notes fit in a group. The bottom number tells you the kind of note to use.

Some music is simple. This means the notes are in pairs. Other music is compound. This means the notes are in groups of three.

Different music uses different numbers. Rock music often uses 4/4 time. A waltz might use 3/4 time.

These numbers help musicians play together. They make the music sound just right.
