Duncan was born on the island of Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He originally wanted to be an Olympic swimmer. However, Hurricane Hugo destroyed the only Olympic-sized pool on his island in 1989. This made it hard for him to practice swimming in the ocean. He eventually turned to basketball at age 14. At first, he felt a bit awkward because he was so tall. He worked hard to master the game and became a star at St. Dunstan's Episcopal.

Before his professional career, Duncan was a standout player in college.
