Tide pools are shallow pools of seawater. They form on rocky shores.

These pools happen when the tide goes out. The sea water gets trapped in the rocks. The sun and moon cause the tides. A tidal cycle usually lasts about 25 hours. This cycle includes two high tides and two low tides.

Life in these pools is very tough. The water levels and heat change often. Animals must adapt to stay alive. Some animals, like mussels, close their shells to keep moisture. Sea anemones can also close up.

You can find many creatures here. Sea stars, crabs, and snails live in the pools. Some fish stay in the pools their whole lives. We call these resident fish. Other fish only visit for a short time.

There are different zones on the shore. The high tide zone gets flooded often. The mid tide zone is covered and uncovered by water. The low tide zone stays underwater most of the time. This area is full of seaweed and many animals.
