Tiberius was a leader of Rome.

Augustus had two grandsons. They were meant to lead after him. But both grandsons died. This meant Tiberius had to become the next leader.

Tiberius was a powerful leader of the Roman Empire.
Before he was an emperor, Tiberius was a very successful general.

Becoming the next leader was not a simple path for Tiberius.
Life as an emperor was often hard for Tiberius. He became the leader at age 55 in AD 14. Many people thought he did not really want the job. He was very different from the bright and confident Augustus. Tiberius often had arguments with the Senate, which was the group of leaders in Rome. He also dealt with many personal losses. His son Drusus died in AD 23, and his nephew Germanicus died in AD 19. These events made him very quiet and lonely.
In his later years, Tiberius lived a very private life.

Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus was the second emperor of Rome.
Born in Rome in 42 BC, Tiberius came from an ancient and noble family.
Before becoming emperor, Tiberius proved himself as a highly capable general and diplomat.
His path to the throne was shaped by a series of unexpected deaths within the imperial family.
Personal relationships also played a major role in Tiberius's life and decisions.
When Tiberius finally became princeps at age 55, he did not seem eager for the role. He struggled with the responsibilities of being the head of state. He often had a resentful relationship with the Senate, the governing body of Rome. Tiberius was a very efficient administrator, but he was also quite reclusive. After the deaths of his son Drusus in AD 23 and his nephew Germanicus in AD 19, he became even more aloof. In AD 26, he left Rome entirely to live in seclusion.
During his later years, Tiberius left much of the daily administration to others.
When Tiberius died in AD 37, he was succeeded by his grand-nephew Caligula.
