Severus had a very busy family life as well.

As emperor, Severus spent much time with his armies. He led wars to make the empire borders stronger. He fought the Parthian Empire in the east. He also led campaigns in Africa and Arabia. Septimius Severus was a major leader who ruled the Roman Empire from 193 to 211.
Severus grew up in North Africa speaking Punic. He also learned to speak Latin and Greek, though he spoke them with a slight accent. He was very interested in learning and gave his first public speech at age 17. He eventually moved to Rome to begin a career in public service. He entered the senatorial order through the recommendation of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. His early career faced some challenges. For example, the Antonine Plague swept through the capital in 166. This plague thinned the ranks of the Senate. Because there were fewer capable men available, Severus was able to advance through many positions quite quickly.
His rise to power began during a chaotic period called the Year of the Five Emperors. This happened after the emperor Pertinax was killed in 193. Severus was one of the final contenders to seize control. His own legions proclaimed him emperor at Carnuntum on April 9. He moved to Italy and took possession of Rome. He replaced the existing Praetorian Guard with troops from his own loyal legions.
Severus was a very active military leader who sought to expand the empire. In the east, he fought the Parthian Empire. His forces successfully sacked their capital, Ctesiphon, in 197. This war expanded the eastern frontier of Rome to the Tigris River.
Family played a central role in his reign and his legacy. After his first wife, Paccia Marciana, died, he married Julia Domna. She was an Emesene Syrian from a family that served as high priests. Severus valued her political opinions and her interest in philosophy. They had two sons, Caracalla and Geta.

In his later years, Severus focused on the northern borders. He traveled to Britain in 208 to strengthen Hadrian's Wall. He also worked to reoccupy the Antonine Wall. In 209, he led a massive invasion of Caledonia, which is modern Scotland. He took an army of 50,000 men with him for this campaign. However, he did not finish this work. He died of an infectious disease in early 211 at Eboracum, which is modern York.
Severus's life shows how the Roman Empire changed over time. His rule moved power away from the traditional Italian center toward the provinces. By bringing leaders from places like Africa and Syria into the highest offices, he changed the nature of Roman leadership. His dynasty provided a period of stability that eventually gave way to a long era of difficulty. His ability to manage both the military and the complex politics of the Senate defined his long reign from 193 to 211.
