It first appeared in the early 1980s. Musicians made it by mixing different sounds together. They took the speed of punk rock. They added the complex parts of heavy metal.

The music uses fast drum beats. It also uses heavy guitar sounds. Many guitarists play very fast solos. They use special ways to move their fingers on the strings. This is often called shredding.

Some singers use melodic voices. Others might shout or scream. The songs often talk about serious topics. These can include politics or unfairness in the world. In the U.S., four bands became very famous. People call them the "Big Four." These bands are Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax.
