His father, James McIntyre, was a medical corpsman in the Royal Thai Army. Because his family was relatively poor, Thongchai worked many jobs to help support his household. He folded paper bags and sold lottery tickets to earn money. He also collected and sold milk cans and sewed traditional hats. To earn a small income, he sometimes taught English to children in the Bang Khae slum. 
His entry into the professional entertainment industry was a multi-step process. While working at Kasikorn Bank, he took side jobs as a model and a doorman. At a discotheque called Flamingo, he met producer Warayut Milinthachinda. Thongchai entertained guests by singing and dancing, which led to his first acting role. He appeared in the 1983 television drama Nam Tan Mai. This role earned him a nomination for the Mekhala Award for Best Supporting Actor. He later won the "Outstanding Singer" award at the 1984 Siam Kolakarn singing contest. This victory led to a contract with Siam Kolakarn, before he eventually transferred to GMM Grammy.
His career with GMM Grammy marked a period of unprecedented growth. In 1986, he released his debut album, Hat Sai Sai Lom Song Rao. This album was recognized as the best male artist album of the year. He became the first Grammy artist to sell 500,000 cassette copies. 
In 1990, a massive cultural moment known as "Bird Fever" occurred. 
Thongchai's commercial dominance continued throughout the 1990s. His 1991 album, Prik Kee Noo, sold over 3.5 million copies. This made it the best-selling Thai album of the 1990s and the "Album of the Decade."
