He rose from a modest background to become the most influential person in the English government. As the chief adviser to King Henry VIII, he managed much of the country's daily business. His influence was so great that people often called him the "alter rex," or the "other king."

He held significant power in both the government and the Catholic Church.

Wolsey's journey to power began with his education and early religious work. He was born around 1473 to Robert Wolsey and Joan Daundy. While many thought his father was a butcher, his mother had connections to influential families. Wolsey studied theology at Magdalen College, Oxford. He was ordained as a priest in 1498 in Marlborough, Wiltshire. He worked as a dean and a rector before entering royal service. He served King Henry VII as a royal chaplain. This king favored people from humble backgrounds, which helped Wolsey advance.

When Henry VIII took the throne in 1509, Wolsey's career accelerated quickly. The king appointed him as almoner, a role that included a seat on the Privy Council. This position allowed him to build a close relationship with the young king. By 1514, Wolsey had become the controlling figure in almost all state matters. He eventually attained the position of Lord Chancellor. This was the highest political office in England. In this role, he acted as the king's primary adviser and administrator.

Wolsey's religious career was just as impressive as his political one. He held many important ecclesiastical appointments, which are roles within the church. In 1514, he became the Archbishop of York, the second most important role in the English church. Pope Leo X named him a cardinal in 1515. This gave him precedence over all other clergy in England. He also served as the Bishop of Durham, where he was known as the Prince-Bishop.

These roles brought him immense wealth, earning him over £35,000 a year.

Wolsey was also a major player in European diplomacy and foreign policy. During the Anglo-French War from 1512 to 1514, he proved his skill by supplying troops. He helped negotiate the Anglo-French treaty of 1514, which secured a temporary peace. In 1518, he organized the Treaty of London. This was a massive peace summit involving 20 different nations. It positioned England as a central leader in European politics.

He also organized the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520. This was a grand meeting between Henry VIII and King Francis I of France to show off English wealth.

Despite his many successes, Wolsey eventually lost the king's trust. The problem began when he could not negotiate an annulment for Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

Because he failed in this task, Henry stripped him of his government titles. Wolsey moved to York to focus on his duties as archbishop. However, he was soon called back to London to face charges of treason. Treason is a crime against the state or the king. Wolsey died of natural causes while traveling to answer these charges in 1530.
