People call him the "Father of English Clockmaking." He was born in England around 1639. He started as a blacksmith before learning to make clocks.

Tompion worked with a scientist named Robert Hooke. This friendship helped him find new ways to make tools. He made some of the first watches with a balance spring. A balance spring is a tiny part that helps a watch keep time. These watches were much more accurate than older ones.

He also made special clocks for the King. These clocks used a long pendulum to swing. A pendulum is a weight that hangs from a point and swings back and forth. Because of this, the clocks only needed winding once a year.

Tompion was a very busy man. He made about 5,500 watches and 650 clocks. He was the first to give each item a number. This is called a serial numbering system. Many of his clocks still work today. Some are kept in Buckingham Palace.
