Tallis was a very skilled musician who did many different jobs. He worked as an organist, which means he played a large keyboard instrument. He also served as a teacher for other young musicians. He was a performer and a composer for the royal court. Tallis could change his musical style to please different rulers. He was able to match the specific demands of each monarch. This skill helped him stay important in the royal household for many years.

We do not know exactly when Tallis was born. Historians think he was born between 1500 and 1520. He likely grew up in the county of Kent. His early life is a mystery because no records exist from that time. He may have been a young singer at a place called the Chapel Royal. He also likely worked at the Benedictine Priory in Dover.

Tallis had a very long and busy career serving four different rulers. He served King Henry VIII and King Edward VI. He also worked for Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I. In 1531, he was working at the Dover Priory in Kent. Later, he moved to Waltham Abbey in Essex around 1538. By 1540, he was singing at Canterbury Cathedral. In 1575, he and William Byrd were given a special right to print music. This was a rare monopoly that allowed them to publish songs in many languages.

Tallis helped shape the future of English music by teaching others. His most famous student was William Byrd, who became a great composer himself. Tallis even became the godfather to Byrd's second son, Thomas Byrd. Tallis lived much of his life in Greenwich, near the royal palace. He died in November of 1585. His music connects us to the sounds of the 16th century. Even today, his songs remind us of the great era of the Renaissance.
