Thomas Esang "Tommy" Remengesau Jr. is a prominent political leader from Palau. Palau is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. Remengesau has held several of the most important offices in the country. He served as the President of Palau during two separate periods. His first presidency lasted from 2001 until 2009. He returned to the presidency from 2013 until 2021. Between these two terms, he also served as a Senator in the Palau National Congress.

Remengesau's political career began with a focus on the younger generation. In 1984, he ran for a seat in the Palau National Congress. At only 28 years old, he successfully campaigned to become the youngest senator in the history of the nation. He used a grassroots campaign to gain support from the youth voting bloc. Following his time in the Senate, he was elected Vice President of Palau in 1992 and again in 1996. During his time as Vice President, he also held the position of Minister of Administration.

His rise to the presidency involved several competitive elections. In 2000, he won the presidency by defeating former senator Peter Sugiyama. Remengesau received 52% of the vote, while Sugiyama received 46%. He was re-elected in 2004 by defeating Polycarp Basilius. In that election, Remengesau won 66.5% of the vote to Basilius' 33.5%. His second term as president began in 2013 after he defeated Johnson Toribiong in the 2012 election. He later won a close race in 2016 against Senator Surangel Whipps Jr., receiving 5,109 votes to Whipps' 4,854.

One major goal for Remengesau was making Palau more economically independent. He wanted the nation to rely less on financial aid from the United States. To achieve this, he promoted tourism using the slogan "Preserve the Best and Improve the Rest." The "best" part of his plan focused on Palau's marine water resources. These waters are known for being incredibly diverse and bountiful. He viewed the underwater attractions as a way to build a strong reputation in the world. By protecting the ocean, he hoped to grow the economy through sustainable travel.

Remengesau also became a global voice for environmental protection. He worked to increase Palau's presence within the United Nations. He helped lead international environmental initiatives, such as the Micronesian Challenge. He was a vocal advocate for South Pacific nations regarding the dangers of global warming. He specifically addressed how rising sea levels threaten island nations. His work was featured in the 2016 documentary film *Before the Flood*. These efforts earned him many prestigious honors from the international community.

His environmental leadership resulted in several significant awards. In 2013, he received the Pacific Champion Award. The following year, in 2014, he was named a Champion of the Earth by the United Nations. He also received the Inspiring Conservation Award and the IGFA Conservation Award in 2014. In 2016, he was honored with the Peter Benchley Ocean Award for Excellence in National Stewardship. Additionally, he was awarded the Order of Brilliant Jade with Grand Cordon by the Republic of China in 2007.

Remengesau's career also included periods of legal and personal challenge. In 2009, while serving as a Senator, he faced an investigation regarding his financial disclosures. He was charged with 19 counts of violating the Palau code of ethics. The charges involved failing to properly file information about the value of land and other assets. Remengesau stated that he believed his previous filings had been in compliance with the law. In April 2010, Associate Justice Kathleen Salii imposed a fine of US$156,400 on him. He noted that the experience was an "eye opener" for other officials regarding asset disclosure.

Beyond his political roles, Remengesau has deep ties to Palauan tradition. He succeeded his father, Thomas Remengesau Sr., as the Maderngebuked of Ngaraard. His father was also a highly influential figure, serving as a Minister and President. Remengesau's life has been defined by his service to both the modern government and traditional structures. In 2024, he ran for a fifth term in office. However, he lost the election to the incumbent, Surangel Whipps Jr. This marked the first time Remengesau had lost an election in his career.
