He lived from 1710 to 1796. Reid was a teacher at the University of Glasgow. He also helped start the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Reid is known for his idea of common sense. He believed this was the base for all thinking. Some thinkers said we only know ideas in our minds. Reid said this was not true. He argued that we know a real world exists outside us. He thought our minds are built to believe these things.

Reid also studied how we use language. He said language has two parts. One part is the sounds we make. The other part is what those sounds mean. He thought children learn by copying sounds first. This is a natural way to learn.

He also looked at how we see things. He made a split between sensation and perception. Sensation is what our senses feel. Perception is how we know a thing is real. He thought artists and children help us see this truth. Reid's work helped shape how people think about the mind.
