He also wrote a famous book called The Magic Mountain in 1924. This book was inspired by a visit to a sanatorium in Switzerland. He later wrote a series called Joseph and His Brothers between 1933 and 1943. Mann used many different ideas to build his stories. He combined old legends with modern ways of thinking.

After his father died in 1891, the family moved to Munich. Thomas studied many subjects like history, art, and economics. He wanted to prepare for a career in journalism. He even gave speeches on the BBC radio to speak against the Nazi regime. These broadcasts were meant to reach people back in Germany.

Mann's family was also very involved in the world of ideas. He and his wife, Katia, had six children together. Three of them, Erika, Klaus, and Golo, became important German writers too. Even though he lived far from home, he stayed connected to his culture. He lived through many hard times, including two world wars. He died in Switzerland on August 12, 1955.
