Chivers is very famous for his link to Edgar Allan Poe. The two men became friends in 1845. Chivers even wanted to help Poe with money. Later, Chivers had a big debate about Poe's work. He claimed Poe took ideas from his own poems. This included the famous poem "The Raven." Even so, Chivers worked hard to protect Poe's name. He defended Poe against people who spoke poorly of him. Chivers died in Georgia in 1858. His last words were about feeling perfect peace. He left behind many writings about how poetry works.
