Hardy loved the English countryside. Many of his stories happen in a place called Wessex. This was a name he used for parts of South West England. He wrote about the lives of people in these rural areas. Some of his most loved books are "Far from the Madding Crowd" and "Tess of the d'Urbervilles." These stories are often sad. They show people struggling with hard lives.

Hardy was also a poet. He thought of himself as a poet first. Many younger poets looked up to him as a teacher. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature 25 times. After he died, he was honored in a special place. His ashes are in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey.
