He worked as a painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts educator. Eakins is known as a master of realism. Realism is an art style that shows subjects exactly as they appear in real life. He spent his professional career, lasting about 40 years, working from life. He lived and worked mostly in his hometown of Philadelphia.

His work provided a deep look into the intellectual life of his city during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Eakins developed a very precise way of creating art. As a child, he watched his father, a writing master, work with careful lines. By age twelve, Eakins could use a grid to lay out complex designs. He applied these skills to his paintings through intense observation. He used mathematics to master perspective, which is the technique of showing deep space on a flat surface. He also used new motion photography to study how the human body moves. This allowed him to capture the truth of physical action in his art.

His artistic vision was shaped by many different subjects. He painted hundreds of portraits of family, friends, and prominent professionals. These included people from the fields of medicine, science, and the clergy. He also moved beyond the drawing room into active outdoor spaces. He painted in streets, parks, rivers, and even surgical amphitheaters.

These settings allowed him to study the human figure in full sunlight. He was especially interested in the nude or lightly clad figure in motion.

Eakins received a deep education in both art and science. He attended Central High School in Philadelphia, where he studied mechanical drawing. He later enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1861. From 1864 to 1865, he studied anatomy and dissection at Jefferson Medical College. This scientific interest in the human body even led him to consider becoming a surgeon. Later, from 1866 to 1870, he studied in Europe. He studied under the French realist Jean-Léon Gérôme and the anatomically precise Léon Bonnat.

He also traveled to Spain to study masters like Diego Velázquez and Jusepe de Ribera.

His return to America brought several famous works to light. One of his most notable early paintings is *Max Schmitt in a Single Scull* from 1871.

This painting of a rower was considered a shock to the artistic traditions of his time. To create it, Eakins used preparatory drawings of the figure and precise perspective plans of the boat. Another significant series included domestic Victorian interiors. These paintings, such as *Elizabeth at the Piano*, showed people in natural, unsentimental attitudes. He also painted *Kathrin Crowell with a Kitten* in 1872, a large portrait of a woman who later became his fiancée.

As an educator, Eakins had a massive influence on American art. He became a professor and later the director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1882. His teaching methods were very advanced and even controversial. He did not make students draw from antique casts for long periods. Instead, he wanted them to grasp true color through immediate painting. He encouraged the use of photography to understand anatomy.

His courses included rigorous studies in the fundamentals of form and mathematical perspective.

Eakins' commitment to realism faced significant challenges. Because he insisted on painting figures with such truthfulness, he faced behavioral and sexual scandals. These controversies truncated his success and challenged his reputation during his lifetime. He received very little recognition while he was alive. However, his dedication to the human form remained constant. He even collaborated with the sculptor William Rudolf O'Donovan on bronze equestrian reliefs for Brooklyn.
