He realized that Archaebacteria were a distinct group from Bacteria. In 1993, his system included kingdoms like Archezoa and Chromista. Later, in 1998, he simplified his model down to six kingdoms. These included Animalia, Protozoa, Fungi, Plantae, Chromista, and Bacteria. 
His academic journey began in London, where he was born in 1942. He received his early education at the Norwich School. He later studied biology at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He earned his PhD in Zoology from King's College London. During his doctoral studies from 1964 to 1967, he worked under Sir John Randall. His thesis focused on organelle development in a specific organism called Chlamydomonas reinhardii. He also spent time as a guest investigator at Rockefeller University. Eventually, he held prestigious positions at the University of British Columbia and the University of Oxford. 
Cavalier-Smith was a controversial figure in the scientific community. He preferred a narrative style of science, much like Charles Darwin. This meant he relied on detailed stories of evolutionary change. Many of his peers preferred cladistics, a method using strict mathematical or branching rules. He suggested the last universal common ancestor was a non-flagellate, Gram-negative bacterium. This organism was a "diderm" bacterium, meaning it had two membranes. Thomas Cavalier-Smith passed away in March 2021 after developing cancer. His vast body of work continues to influence how we study the history of life.
