Thermoplasma

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Thermoplasma is a special group of tiny living things. Scientists call these living things archaeans. They belong to a class named Thermoplasmata. These tiny creatures live in very tough places. They love high-temperature spots. They also thrive in acidic environments. This means they like sour water.

These living things have a very special way of working. Most tiny things have a hard outer skin called a cell wall. Thermoplasma does not have a cell wall at all. Instead, it has a unique membrane. This membrane is made of a lipoglycan. A lipoglycan is a mix of fats and sugars. It uses a special lipid and sugars called glucose and mannose.

This special skin helps the tiny things survive. The lipoglycan provides thermal stability. This means it keeps them safe in the heat. It also provides acid stability. This helps them stay safe in sour water. The skin acts like a strong shield. It keeps the inside of the tiny thing steady.

There are different kinds of Thermoplasma to know. One type is called Thermoplasma acidophilum. Another type is called Thermoplasma volcanium. These tiny things are also facultative anaerobes. This means they can live with or without air. They breathe using sulfur. They also use organic carbon to live.

You can think of them like tiny explorers. They live where most other things cannot. They do not need much air to work. Their special skin is like a suit of armor. It protects them from heat and acid. They find food in very strange ways. It is amazing how they survive.
