Historically, the thermometer was not a single invention but an evolving technology. In the 3rd century BC, Philo of Byzantium documented experiments using air and liquid. He showed that heating air in a sphere could generate bubbles in a vessel. Later, the Roman physician Galen introduced the concept of measuring heat in "degrees." He even suggested a fixed reference point using a mixture of equal parts ice and boiling water.

During the Renaissance, scientists like Galileo Galilei and Santorio Santorio developed the thermoscope. A thermoscope could show relative changes in heat, but it lacked a numerical scale. It was only when Santorio Santorio added a scale in 1625 that the device became a true thermometer.

One major hurdle in early thermometry was the lack of a standard scale. Without an agreed-upon system, readings from different devices could not be compared. Scientists worked for centuries to establish fixed points. In 1714, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit created a highly reliable thermometer using mercury. He proposed a scale that eventually became known as the Fahrenheit scale. In 1742, Anders Celsius proposed a different scale. He originally set zero at the boiling point of water and 100 at the freezing point.

Today, the International Temperature Scale of 1990 provides a modern standard that approximates the absolute thermodynamic temperature scale.

Thermometers are categorized by how they handle data. Most traditional models are non-registering. This means the device shows the temperature only while it is in contact with the object. If you move a non-registering thermometer, the reading changes immediately to match the new environment. In contrast, registering thermometers can hold a temperature reading indefinitely.

Mechanical registering thermometers can hold the highest or lowest temperature reached until they are manually reset. Electronic registering thermometers can even be programmed to record temperatures at specific times.

There are different types of thermometers designed for specific tasks. Medical thermometers are used to monitor human health. In 1866, Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt invented a clinical thermometer that could provide a reading in five minutes, which was much faster than the previous twenty-minute versions.

Other thermometers are used in meteorology to track weather or in industry to monitor complex processes. Some are even used in cooking, such as bi-metallic stem thermometers used for steamed milk.

Understanding thermometers requires distinguishing between empirical and absolute measurements. Absolute thermometers are calibrated using the thermodynamic absolute temperature scale. Empirical thermometers may not match the absolute scale exactly in their numbers. However, they must still be consistent. For any two bodies, all empirical thermometers must agree on which one is hotter. This fundamental characteristic ensures that even if scales differ, the logic of temperature remains universal.
