Thermodynamics is a branch of science. It studies heat, work, and temperature. It also looks at how energy moves.

Scientists use four laws to explain these things. The first law says energy can move between systems. It can move as heat or as work. The second law talks about entropy. Entropy is a way to measure order in a system. It also shows which way a system will change.

This science started a long time ago. People wanted to make steam engines work better. Sadi Carnot is often called the father of thermodynamics. He wrote about how heat can create power. Later, Rudolf Clausius named the idea of entropy.

Today, we use these ideas in many ways. It helps us study chemical reactions. It even helps us understand black holes in space. We also use it to study how cells work.

There are different ways to study this. Classical thermodynamics looks at big, measurable changes. Statistical mechanics looks at tiny particles. It studies how small atoms move together to make big changes.
