Thermal energy

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

People use the term thermal energy in many ways. It can be a confusing word. Some people use it to talk about internal energy. This is the energy kept inside a thing. It includes the power of tiny moving bits. It also includes chemical energy. This is energy held in the parts of a molecule.

Other people use the term to mean heat. Heat is energy that moves. It travels from one thing to another. Heat can move by touch or by light. It can also move through friction. Heat is not something a thing keeps. It is a way energy moves between things.

In a gas, the tiny bits move on their own. They bump into each other. This motion is the source of heat. In some books, thermal energy is a math rule. It uses a number called the Boltzmann constant. This rule links energy to temperature.

Energy can also change. Chemical energy can turn into thermal energy. This often happens during a reaction. We sometimes call this the heat of reaction. Scientists try to use exact words to avoid confusion.
