When he died, the people of Athens honored him with a public funeral. His successor at the school was Strato of Lampsacus. In his will, Theophrastus left his house and garden to the Lyceum.

In the field of botany, Theophrastus wrote two major works. The first was titled "Enquiry into Plants," or *Historia Plantarum*. The second was "On the Causes of Plants."

These books were vital to science during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In "Enquiry into Plants," he classified plants by how they reproduce. He also grouped them by size and their practical uses. He looked at trees, shrubs, and herbs in detail. He even studied plants that produce juices, gums, or resins.

His second major work focused on the mechanics of plant life. "On the Causes of Plants" examined how plants actually grow. He studied the factors that influence how fertile a plant is. He also wrote about the best times to sow and reap seeds. Theophrastus investigated how to prepare soil and use manure. He even looked at the smells and tastes of different species. He recognized how much climate affects the life of a plant. He also observed the process of germination, where a seed begins to grow.

Beyond plants, Theophrastus explored many complex philosophical ideas. In metaphysics, he studied the nature of motion and the soul. He viewed space as the arrangement and position of bodies. He believed that time was a byproduct of motion. He also held that motion was an inevitable result of all activity. In the field of ethics, he had unique views on happiness. He argued that happiness depends on both virtue and external influences. He also studied grammar, language, and logic to expand Aristotle's work.

Although many of his writings are lost, his influence remains. He wrote on many subjects including physics, weather, and stones. He even wrote monographs on other early Greek philosophers. Some of his works, like his books on plants, survived in their entirety. Other works exist only as fragments or pieces of text. Even these fragments show the vast reach of his intellect. His work helped bridge the gap between ancient thought and modern science.
