He was a leader in Black theater. Ward was born in Louisiana in 1902. His father was a teacher. This helped Ward learn to write at a young age.

Ward wrote more than thirty plays. He did not want his stories to be simple. He wanted them to feel real. He wrote about the lives of Black people in cities. This was a new way to tell stories. Most plays at that time used loud music and dancing. Ward used natural ways to show real people.

He worked with other great writers. Together, they started the Negro Playwrights Company. This group included famous people like Langston Hughes. One of Ward's big plays was Big White Fog. It was made in Chicago in 1938. He also wrote a play called Our Lan'. It played on Broadway in New York. This was a very big deal for a Black writer.

Ward also loved to teach. He led writing classes for adults. He helped children learn about drama too. He won many awards for his hard work. Today, people remember him as a pioneer of theater.
