He served from 1901 to 1909. Roosevelt was a leader of the Republican Party. He was also a major force behind the Progressive Era. This was a time of big changes in American society. He used his power to promote fairness and reform. His presidency changed how the government interacted with businesses and nature. Many historians rank him as one of the greatest American presidents.

Roosevelt's early life was defined by his struggle with health.

As a child, he suffered from debilitating asthma. This condition made breathing very difficult and scary. To overcome this, he began a heavy regimen of physical exercise. He even trained with a boxing coach to build strength. He also developed a deep interest in zoology and natural history. At age seven, he began collecting specimens for a makeshift museum. He even wrote a paper about insects when he was nine.

After his studies at Harvard, Roosevelt entered the world of politics.

The Rough Riders were a diverse group of men. They included athletes, frontiersmen, and Native Americans. Roosevelt led them in famous charges up Kettle Hill and San Juan Hill. This war hero status helped him win the 1900 election. He ran as the vice president alongside William McKinley. However, McKinley was assassinated shortly after the election. At age 42, Roosevelt became the youngest person to assume the presidency.

As president, Roosevelt championed his "Square Deal" domestic policies.

He focused heavily on Central America. He began the construction of the Panama Canal to connect oceans. He also expanded the United States Navy. He even sent the Great White Fleet on a world tour. This was done to project American naval power across the globe. In 1906, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. He earned this for his successful efforts to end the Russo-Japanese War. He was the first non-European to receive this honor.

Later in life, Roosevelt faced political challenges. He grew frustrated with the conservatism of his successor, William Howard Taft. In 1912, he failed to win the Republican nomination. Instead, he founded the Bull Moose Party and ran again. This split in the party helped the Democrat, Woodrow Wilson, win. Roosevelt also led an expedition to the Amazon basin. During this trip, he nearly died from tropical disease. He died in 1919 after a life of intense activity. His legacy remains a central part of American history.
