Æthelstan was a powerful ruler during the tenth century.

He served as King of the Anglo-Saxons from 924 to 927. From 927 until his death in 939, he was King of the English. Modern historians view him as the first true King of England. He is also considered one of the greatest Anglo-Saxon kings.

He was the son of King Edward the Elder and Ecgwynn. Because he never married, he had no children to succeed him. His half-brother, Edmund I, became king after he died.

His path to the throne involved significant political struggle. When Edward the Elder died in July 924, the kingdom was divided. The Mercians accepted Æthelstan as their king immediately. However, he faced resistance from the people in Wessex.

His half-brother, Ælfweard, may have been recognized in Wessex first. But Ælfweard died only three weeks after their father. Even then, Æthelstan faced opposition for several months. He was not officially crowned until September 925 at Kingston upon Thames. This ceremony was unique because he wore a crown instead of a helmet.

Æthelstan expanded his power through military conquest. In 927, he conquered York. This was the final Viking kingdom in the region. By winning this territory, he became the first Anglo-Saxon ruler of all England.

He later moved into Scotland in 934. He forced the Scottish leader, Constantine II, to submit to his authority. These actions made him a dominant figure in the British Isles.

His dominance led to major conflicts with his neighbors. The Scots and the Vikings resented his rule. In 937, they joined forces to invade England. Æthelstan met them at the Battle of Brunanburh. This was a massive and decisive victory for his forces. The win gave him great prestige across Europe. It proved he could defend his unified kingdom against foreign threats.

As a ruler, Æthelstan worked to centralize the government. He increased control over the production of charters. A charter is an official document used to grant rights or land. He also summoned important leaders to his councils. These meetings included rulers from outside his territory. For example, Welsh kings attended to acknowledge his overlordship.

This helped create a more organized and connected state.

He was also deeply involved in law and religion. More legal texts survive from his reign than any other tenth-century king. These texts show he wanted to stop widespread robberies. He believed these crimes threatened the social order. He built his legal reforms on the work of Alfred the Great.

As a pious king, he founded many churches. He also collected religious relics to honor his faith.

Æthelstan's influence reached far beyond his own borders. His royal household became a center for English learning. This environment helped start the Benedictine monastic reform later in the century. He also played a major role in European politics. He arranged marriages for his sisters with rulers on the Continent.

This helped connect England to the rest of Europe. He died on 27 October 939. After his death, the Vikings took back control of York until 954.
