Known together as the Wachowskis, the sisters have worked as a cohesive writing and directing team for most of their careers. They are both trans women, an identity that Lilly Wachowski has noted informs the themes of their work. Their films often explore complex ideas regarding identity, self-image, and transformation. Through their unique visual styles and storytelling, they have shaped modern science fiction and action cinema.

The process of making their films involves intricate collaboration and technical innovation. They often write their own scripts or co-write them with other creators. For example, they collaborated with German filmmaker Tom Tykwer on the film Cloud Atlas. In some projects, they use advanced technology to achieve specific visual goals. For the film Speed Racer, they used a digital backlot and digital cinematography to simulate the look of Japanese anime.

This required extensive visual effects during the post-production stage to blend live action with an animated aesthetic.

The Wachowskis' filmography includes various genres and styles. They began with the neo-noir thriller Bound in 1996, which was noted for featuring a same-sex relationship without making it the central plot point. Their most famous work is the science fiction franchise The Matrix. This series includes the original 1999 film and two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, released in 2003. They have also worked on adaptations of graphic novels, such as V for Vendetta, and large-scale ensemble pieces like Cloud Atlas.

While some later projects, like Speed Racer, faced commercial challenges, others like The Matrix Reloaded became major box office hits. The Reloaded sequel held the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film for over ten years.

Several of their projects have left lasting marks on popular culture. The film V for Vendetta popularized the Guy Fawkes mask, which was later adopted by the hacktivist group Anonymous. Their Netflix series Sense8, co-created with J. Michael Straczynski, was a major project that concluded in 2018. Even when working on difficult independent productions, they achieve significant scale. Cloud Atlas, released in 2012, was the most expensive independent film produced up to that date. It featured a budget of over $100 million and received a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In recent years, the sisters have begun pursuing separate professional paths. After the conclusion of Sense8, Lilly Wachowski worked on episodes for the Showtime series Work in Progress. Lana Wachowski directed the film The Matrix Resurrections, which was released in December 2021.
