"The Ugly Duckling" is a famous fairy tale from Denmark.

It was written by the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen. He first published the story on 11 November 1843. It appeared in a book called New Fairy Tales. This book was part of his first collection of tales. The stories were shared in Copenhagen. They were received with great praise from critics. Today, many people still love this original story. It has become a very important part of world literature.

The story follows a little bird that looks different.

When the duckling hatches, other animals think he is ugly. They treat him unkindly with mean words and actions. The lonely bird runs away from his home. He lives with wild ducks and geese for a time. He even stays with an old woman and her animals. But a cat and a hen tease him there too. He must travel alone through a very hard winter.

Many people believe the story reflects Andersen's own life.

He was a tall boy with a large nose and feet. Other children used to mock him for his looks. Some think the swan is a symbol for his talent. He had a beautiful singing voice when he grew up. Others say the story was inspired by his friend Jenny Lind. It is a tale about finding where you truly belong.

Artists have turned this story into many different things. Walt Disney made two animated films called Silly Symphonies. The first version was in black and white in 1931. The second version was made in 1939 using Technicolor. That 1939 film even won an Academy Award. In 1932, Yasuji Murata directed a Japanese film about the bird. A Soviet studio called Soyuzmultfilm made a version in 1956. There are also many musical plays and even operas.

This tale connects to how we see the world today. It teaches us about how people can be unkind to those who are different. The bird finally finds happiness when he sees his reflection. He realizes he was never a duckling at all. He was actually a cygnet, which is a young swan.
