The Times of India (TOI) is a major English-language daily news media outlet in India. It holds a significant place in global journalism as the largest selling English-language daily in the world. It is also the third-largest newspaper in India by circulation. Because it provides detailed accounts of important events, it is considered a newspaper of record. This means it is used as an official source for historical documentation. In 1991, the BBC recognized its quality by ranking it among the world's six best newspapers.
The history of the publication began on November 3, 1838. At its start, it was named The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce. It did not publish every day, but only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It was directed by Raobahadur Narayan Dinanath Velkar, a social reformer from Maharashtra. The first editor was J. E. Brennan, followed by George Buist. Under Buist, the paper transitioned into a daily publication in 1850.
Ownership and leadership changed many times during the 19th century. Editor Robert Knight played a vital role in its growth. In 1860, Knight bought out the Indian shareholders' interests. He also merged the paper with a rival called the Bombay Standard. This move allowed him to start India's first news agency. He acted as the Indian agent for the Reuters news service. In 1861, the name was officially changed to The Times of India. Knight fought for a press free from government intimidation or prior restraint.
In 1892, the company entered a new era of ownership. Thomas Jewell Bennett and Frank Morris Coleman formed Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. (BCCL) to acquire the newspaper. The ownership shifted again in 1946 when Ramkrishna Dalmia purchased the company. This happened as British owners left India following its independence. Dalmia's tenure ended after a commission found he had used bank and insurance money to acquire the company. He was later sentenced to two years in Tihar Jail for fraud and embezzlement.
The Sahu Jain family eventually took control of the media group. After Dalmia's legal troubles, his son-in-law, Shanti Prasad Jain, took over the running of BCCL. In the 1960s, the Indian government briefly took control of the newspaper due to legal disputes involving the management. Ownership was later transferred back to the family during the 1976 Emergency. Ashok Kumar Jain was the father of the current owners, Samir Jain and Vineet Jain. The paper has remained a prominent part of Indian life, even appearing on national stamps in 1988 and 2013.
The Times Group operates as a large media conglomerate. It publishes many different titles in various Indian languages. These include Ei Samay Sangbadpatra in Bengali and Navbharat Times in Hindi. It also publishes the Economic Times and several "Mirror" newspapers. The group has expanded into digital media by acquiring websites like Cricbuzz, which focuses on cricket. They also host several major award ceremonies. These include the Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA), which is decided by a global public vote.
Despite its success, the newspaper has faced significant criticism regarding its business practices. Since the 2000s, it has been accused of establishing "paid news" in the Indian industry. This involves accepting payments in exchange for positive news coverage. The company also used a program called "private treaties" or "brand capital." Through this, BCCL offered companies sustained positive coverage in exchange for company shares. By 2012, this practice generated 15% of the company's total revenues. Critics argue this blurs the line between independent journalism and advertising.
