The painting shows a deep red sunset over a stormy sea. A large typhoon, or a very big storm, is coming. In the distance, a fast ship sails away. Its masts are red to match the sky. The water looks like copper. In the water, you can see dark limbs and an iron chain. This shows the sad story of people thrown from a ship. Turner was likely inspired by the Zong incident. In that event, people were thrown overboard to collect insurance money.

Turner used bright colors instead of clear lines. This style makes the scene feel wild and powerful. He wanted people to feel strong emotions. He also wanted to help the movement to end slavery. This movement is called abolition. The painting shows how small humans are against the power of nature. This idea is called the sublime. It means feeling small in front of something huge and scary.
