It was made by a director named Ingmar Bergman. The story takes place in Sweden a long time ago. During this time, a sickness called the plague was spreading.

A knight named Antonius Block returns from a war. He meets a person who represents Death.

To stay alive, the knight challenges Death to a game of chess. He hopes the game will give him more time. While he travels, he meets a family of actors. They have a young son named Mikael. The knight eats wild strawberries with them during a picnic. He wants to do one meaningful deed before his life ends.

The movie uses many symbols. One is the Danse Macabre, which is a dance of death.
