Van Gogh wanted to show their real lives. He said they earned their food with their own hands. He did not want them to look too pretty. He thought a peasant girl was beautiful in a dusty skirt. He wanted the art to smell like smoke and potatoes. He thought this was healthy.

Van Gogh also made a lithograph of the art. A lithograph is a type of print. He made it from memory in one day. He sent these prints to his brother, Theo. Some people did not like the painting at first. A friend named Anthon van Rappard criticized it. This made Van Gogh feel less sure of himself. Still, Van Gogh thought it was his best work. Today, the painting is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
