He wrote a large set of music called *The Planets*. It has seven parts. Each part is named after a planet.

Holst used astrology to find ideas for the music. Astrology is the study of how planets might affect people.

He wanted each part to show a different mood.

He used a very large orchestra. This helped him make many different sounds. The music uses woodwinds, brass, and percussion. It also uses harps and strings. In the part called "Neptune, the Mystic," a group of women sings. They sing without using any words.

Holst worked on the music for nearly three years. He had a busy job at a school. His arm also caused him pain. Two friends helped him write the notes. The music first played in London in 1918. Some critics did not like the new sounds at first. Now, the music is loved all over the world. It has been recorded at least 80 times.
