In the book, a deadly sickness breaks out among the people. This causes the city to be put under a quarantine. A quarantine means the city is closed off from the world. People cannot leave their homes or the city gates. This creates a very difficult life for everyone living there. The book explores how people act when they feel powerless.

The story begins when many rats start to die in the streets. At first, people do not notice the dying animals. Soon, people start to feel very scared and worried.

A doctor named Rieux notices that people are getting sick with a fever. He and his colleagues realize a plague is spreading through Oran. The local leaders are slow to admit how bad it is. They argue about what to do while more people get ill. Eventually, the authorities must declare a real epidemic. They post notices and start to control how people move.

Albert Camus began working on this book in April 1941. He wrote about his ideas in his personal diaries.

In 1942, he told his friend André Malraux that he was writing it. Camus used a real event to help build his story. He looked at a cholera outbreak that happened in Oran in 1849. He chose to set his fictional story in the 1940s instead. This helped him show how people face big crises. The book uses an "absurdist" style to show life.

Many different people live through the sickness in the novel. A journalist named Raymond Rambert tries to escape to Paris. A priest named Paneloux says the plague is a punishment.

A man named Jean Tarrou and an engineer named Joseph Grand help the doctor. They work hard to treat patients in their homes. A criminal named Cottard becomes a smuggler during the quarantine. Even when the sickness is very bad, some people show great courage. The characters show both bravery and fear during the hard times.

This book is often seen as a way to talk about life. Some readers think it is about the French resistance in World War II.

The book became a huge bestseller again in 2020. This happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world. Many people felt the story of the quarantine was very familiar. It reminds us that we can choose how we respond to trouble. Even in a crisis, people can choose to be good. Camus wrote it to show that people are often more good than evil.
