arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Old Guitarist is a famous oil painting. Pablo Picasso made it in 1903 and 1904. It shows an old, thin man. He is a musician in the streets of Barcelona, Spain. He sits hunched over a large, brown guitar.

Most of the painting uses blue, grey, and black. This is part of Picasso's Blue Period. He used these colors because he felt sad and poor. The man is blind, too. He relies on his music to survive. The brown guitar is the only bright color. It shows the man's only hope.

Experts used special tools to look under the paint. They found three hidden figures. One is an old woman. Another is a young mother with a child. They also saw a small animal. Picasso may have painted these people first. This painting is now at the Art Institute of Chicago. It helps us see how Picasso felt during hard times.
