The story is set in the fictional world of Middle-earth. It follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, the titular hobbit. Hobbits are a race that resembles short humans with furry, leathery feet. They typically live in underground houses and work as farmers or gardeners. Bilbo is initially a respectable and home-loving character. However, his life changes when the wizard Gandalf introduces him to Thorin Oakenshield and a company of thirteen dwarves. Their goal is to reclaim their ancestral home, the Lonely Mountain, and its vast treasure from the dragon Smaug.

The narrative follows a picaresque or episodic structure. This means the story moves through a series of distinct adventures or quests. As Bilbo travels through the landscape, each chapter often introduces a new threat or monster. He encounters man-eating trolls, boulder-throwing giants, and evil cave-dwelling goblins. He also meets speaking giant spiders in Mirkwood and heroic, speaking eagles. During a journey through underground tunnels, Bilbo finds a mysterious ring. This ring confers invisibility upon the wearer. He also survives a high-stakes riddle game against a strange creature named Gollum.

As the journey progresses, Bilbo undergoes significant personal growth. He moves from a state of comfort to a state of maturity, competence, and wisdom. He learns to balance his respectable nature with his more adventurous and fey side. He uses his wits and common sense to solve problems. The tension reaches a peak during the Battle of Five Armies. In this climax, many characters and creatures from earlier in the story re-emerge to fight. The conflict involves dwarves, men, elves, goblins, and Wargs.

J. R. R. Tolkien was an academic at the University of Oxford. He served as the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon. He began writing *The Hobbit* in the early 1930s after finding inspiration while marking papers. He famously began with the line, "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." He finished the manuscript by late 1932. The publisher, George Allen & Unwin, decided to publish the book after a ten-year-old boy named Rayner Unwin gave it a favorable review. Tolkien was deeply involved in the book's design. He personally created many of the ten black-and-white illustrations and the detailed maps.

Tolkien's scholarly background heavily influenced the creation of Middle-earth. He had a deep knowledge of Germanic philology, which is the study of historical languages. His interest in mythology and fairy tales also shaped the world. Some critics believe his experiences during the First World War helped influence the themes of the story. The book's setting was originally conceived as a self-contained fairy tale. However, as Tolkien began writing his sequel, *The Lord of the Rings*, he made retrospective changes. He integrated *The Hobbit* into his larger mythology, known as a legendarium.
