*The Graduate* is a famous American film from 1967. It is a romantic comedy-drama that tells a complicated story. The movie follows Benjamin Braddock, a young man who just finished college. He returns to his parents' home in Pasadena, California. During a party, he meets an older woman named Mrs. Robinson. She is the wife of his father's law partner. The story moves through many different feelings and places. Benjamin spends a summer floating in his parents' swimming pool. He meets Mrs. Robinson at the Taft Hotel under a fake name. Things get difficult when Benjamin starts dating Elaine. He even tries to sabotage their first date by driving recklessly. Eventually, Benjamin follows Elaine to her school at UC Berkeley. He tries to win her back, but her father, Mr. Robinson, tries to stop them. In the end, Benjamin rushes to a wedding in Santa Barbara. He arrives just as the ceremony is ending. He uses a large cross to block the church doors so he and Elaine can escape together.

Making this movie was a very hard job for the creators. The director, Mike Nichols, was new to Hollywood at the time. Many film studios turned the project down. They read the book and did not think it was funny. Producer Lawrence Turman had to find a way to get money to make it. Finally, producer Joseph E. Levine agreed to help. Nichols also had to find the right actors for the roles. Many famous actresses were considered to play Mrs. Robinson. Dustin Hoffman was chosen for the lead role, even though he was not the first choice.

The film became a massive success in North America. It made $104.9 million in the United States and Canada. If you adjust that for inflation, it is worth about $857 million today. This makes it the 22nd highest-grossing film in those countries. The movie also won an Oscar for Best Director. Mike Nichols received this award for his great work. The music was also a big part of its success. The folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel recorded the soundtrack. Their song "Mrs. Robinson" became a huge hit.
