These reptiles were highly diverse in both body shape and size. Scientists categorize them into two distinct superfamilies: Askeptosauroidea and Thalattosauroidea. While they look somewhat like lizards, their exact place on the reptile family tree remains a subject of scientific debate. They are widely accepted as diapsids, which are reptiles with two holes in the skull behind the eye sockets.

This group represents an important look at how reptiles adapted to life in the water.

The two superfamilies show different levels of aquatic specialization. Askeptosauroids were likely semiaquatic fish eaters. They possessed long necks with at least 11 vertebrae and straight snouts. Their limb bones remained hourglass-shaped, similar to land reptiles, which suggests they could move on land.

In contrast, Thalattosauroids were much more specialized for life in the ocean. They had shorter necks and tall neural spines on their vertebrae. These spines increased the surface area used for swimming via lateral undulation, which is a side-to-side movement.

Their limbs were short and wide, making them poorly adapted for walking on land.

Thalattosaurs possessed several unique physical adaptations for marine life. Most species had long, paddle-like tails used for underwater propulsion. Their nostrils, or nares, were shifted back toward the eyes.

The skull structure was also quite specialized. They lacked certain bones like the quadratojugal, postparietal, and tabular bones. Many species also had a very long rostrum, or snout, formed largely by the premaxillary bones. In some Thalattosauroids, the snout even featured a downturned tip or a toothy hook. This hook was separated from the rest of the jaw by a gap called a diastema.

History shows that our understanding of these animals has changed over time. In 1904, a researcher named Merriam first named the order. At that time, he only knew of one species: *Thalattosaurus alexandrae*.

Early paleontologists thought they were closely related to squamates, such as modern lizards, or rhynchocephalians, like the tuatara.

Some even suggested a link to ichthyosaurs due to their similar lifestyles. However, Merriam noted that their skull and vertebral anatomy were too different. He suggested that their similar appearances were likely the result of convergent evolution, where different animals develop similar traits due to living in similar environments.

The diet of a thalattosaur can often be guessed by looking at its teeth. This method is known as correlating diet with tooth shape. Some species, like *Endennasaurus*, were entirely toothless and may have eaten small prey like fish fry.

Others had heterodont dentition, meaning they had different types of teeth. For example, *Xinpusaurus* and *Concavispina* had large, fang-like teeth at the front and thick, button-like teeth at the back.

The tall teeth were used for crunching armored fish or crustaceans. The low, robust teeth were used for crushing large molluscs with thick shells. *Gunakadeit* had slender teeth, suggesting it fed on soft, fast-moving prey like squid.

Thalattosaurs were part of a complex marine food web. They were not always the top predators. One famous fossil discovery shows a predatory interaction between marine reptiles. A 5-meter long ichthyosaur was found with the torso of a 4-meter long *Xinpusaurus xingyiensis* inside its body cavity.

This is recognized as the oldest known instance of one marine reptile preying upon another. The largest thalattosaurs could grow to over 4 meters in length, using their flattened tails to move through the water.

Geographically, these reptiles lived in a world dominated by the supercontinent Pangaea. This landmass was surrounded by the massive Panthalassa Ocean. A large tropical sea called the Tethys Ocean also existed between parts of the continent.

Askeptosauroids were mostly found in the Tethys Ocean, with fossils in Europe and China. Thalattosauroids had a much wider distribution, living along the coasts of both Panthalassa and the Tethys. They were especially diverse in China and western North America. Because they were not adapted for the deep, open ocean, they likely moved between regions using coastal refuges like volcanic island arcs.
