Thalassodromeus

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Thalassodromeus was a remarkable flying reptile from the past. It lived in what is now Brazil about 100 million years ago. This animal belonged to a group called pterosaurs. These creatures lived during the Early Cretaceous period. They shared the world with many different dinosaurs and other animals. Scientists found its skull in the Araripe Basin in 1983.

The most amazing part of this animal was its head. It had one of the largest skulls among all pterosaurs. A huge crest grew from the tip of its snout. This crest ran all the way to the back of its head. The crest was very light and mostly hollow inside. It had many tiny channels for blood vessels to pass through. This crest might have helped the animal stay cool or show off.

Researchers have spent a long time studying these fossils. Alexander Kellner and Diogenes de Almeida Campos named the species in 2002. They called it Thalassodromeus sethi. The name means "sea runner" in Ancient Greek. They chose the name sethi because the crest looked like a crown. Some people thought it looked like the crown of the Egyptian god Seth. Other scholars said it actually looked like the crown of the god Amon.

There are many specific facts about how this creature lived. Its skull was about 2 feet long. Scientists estimate its wingspan was about 16 feet wide. The jaws were toothless but had very sharp edges. This helped it catch and eat prey. Some people thought it skimmed over the water like a modern skimmer bird. Now, many think it used strong jaw muscles to eat food on the ground.

You can imagine how huge this animal truly was. Its height was roughly the same as a human. When it spread its wings, it would be much wider than a person. It was a master of the air and the land. Its relatives suggest it was very good at moving on the ground too. It lived in a place called the Romualdo Formation. This was a busy world full of many flying and walking creatures.
