Another style is called kap hor klong. This is a series of poems where one type is wrapped inside another. Poets also use something called chan. These are polished poems based on Indian meters. To write these, people had to study hard. They learned many words from Sanskrit and Pali. This intensive education was often for the noble classes.

Much of this tradition comes from very old roots. The Thai people share literary origins with other Tai speakers. Early poems used indigenous forms like rai, khlong, kap, and klon.

One early example is the epic poem Thao Hung Thao Cheuang. This is a shared story about a Khmer warrior. Later, Indian culture had a huge influence on the language. This happened through the spread of Buddhism and Hinduism. During the reign of King Boromma-trailokkanat, things changed quickly. Between 1448 and 1488, the language grew to include many new words. This helped create a new national identity for the Siamese.

Many famous works come from specific times and places. In 1292, King Ram Khamhaeng made a famous stone inscription.

Many stories and dance forms spread across mainland Southeast Asia. The Ramakien even helped shape the arts in Laos. Even though many works were lost in 1767, much remains. We still have beautiful poems like Phra Lo from around the year 1500. This poem is about a hero and two princesses. It is considered one of the best lilit compositions. These stories help us understand the history and heart of the Thai people.

Thai literature is the written expression of the Thai people. Most imaginative works were composed in poetry before the 19th century. Prose was generally reserved for historical records, chronicles, and legal documents. Because poetry was the primary medium for storytelling, Thai poetical forms are highly developed and numerous. This tradition has left a massive corpus of pre-modern poetic works. While many works were lost during the sack of Ayutthaya in 1767, a large number of epic poems survive. These include original stories and tales drawn from foreign sources.

The mechanics of Thai poetry involve complex structures and linguistic layers. Poets use various metrical forms to create specific rhythms and moods. Some forms are playful and humorous, while others are romantic or elegant. For example, the chan prosody uses polished meters modified from classical Sanskrit. Poets also create "hybrid" poems to experiment with cadence. One such form is lilit, which interleaves different types of verses. Another is kap hor klong, where a series of khlong poems is enveloped by kap verses.

Thai literary traditions are built upon several distinct stages and styles. Early poetry relied on indigenous forms like rai, khlong, kap, and klon. These forms were shared among various Tai language speakers long before the emergence of Siam. Later, the language evolved through significant Indian influence. This influence brought Chanda prosodic meters via Ceylon. Because the Thai language is mono-syllabic, poets adopted many loan words from Sanskrit and Pali. This allowed them to compose using complex classical meters.

History shows that these linguistic changes accelerated during the 15th century. During the reign of King Boromma-trailokkanat (1448–1488), Siam transformed into an empire under the mandala feudal system. This new governance required an imperial language for the ruling noble classes. This process set the Siamese language apart from other Tai languages. It forced the development of a writing system that could preserve the orthography of Sanskrit words. By the 15th century, the Thai language had a distinctive literary identity.

The significance of these works is often tied to religious and royal authority. The Traibhumikatha, or "The Three Worlds," was composed around 1345 CE. Attributed to King LiThai, it is a scholarly cosmological treatise. King LiThai consulted over 30 Buddhist treatises to complete this work. Another vital text is the Ramakien, the Thai national epic. It is a version of the Indian Ramayana received from the Lavo Kingdom. The epic is so central to Thai kingship that all Thai kings have used the title "Rama" to this day.

Notable examples of Thai literature demonstrate the depth of its emotional and historical range. The lilit poem Lilit Yuan Phai is an epic war poem of about 1,180 lines. It records the war between King Borommatrailokkanat and King Tilokaraj. Another masterpiece is Lilit Phra Lo, a tragico-romantic epic from approximately 1500. It is roughly 2,600 lines long and is considered a high achievement in the poetic tradition. Even the religious Mahachat, which tells the story of the Buddha's last life, is a major literary pillar. It was traditionally divided into 13 books, though six were lost in 1767.

Thai literature is deeply connected to the broader cultural systems of Southeast Asia. Classical Thai literature exerted considerable influence on neighboring countries. It shaped the literary and dramatic arts in Cambodia, Burma, and Laos. The Ramakien, for instance, provided a perennial source for dramatic materials like khon and lakhon. These classical dance dramas were once reserved for aristocratic audiences in the Ayutthaya court. Today, the legacy of these stories continues to connect the Thai people to their historical roots and their neighbors.
