The history of Thai is very long and interesting. The writing system has existed for about eight centuries.
Linguists group Thai into the Kra-Dai language family. It is part of the Southwestern branch of Tai languages. This family includes many languages spoken from China down to the Cambodian border. Standard Thai is based on the way people in central Thailand speak. It is one of many related languages, like Northern Thai or Southern Thai. Some people see these as different languages, while others call them dialects. They all belong to a large group of similar languages.
Learning about Thai shows how languages change over hundreds of years. Between the years 1300 and 1600, the sounds of Thai changed a lot.
Thai is the official language of Thailand and serves as a vital tool for national connection.
Linguistically, Thai is classified as a tonal and analytic language. Being tonal means that the pitch of a speaker's voice changes a word's meaning.
Thai belongs to the Kra–Dai language family. Specifically, it is part of the Southwestern branch of Tai languages. This large language family includes many indigenous languages spoken in an arc from Hainan and Guangxi. These languages stretch south through Laos and Northern Vietnam toward the Cambodian border. While many linguists classify related varieties like Northern or Southern Thai as distinct languages, many native speakers view them as regional dialects. They often describe these variations as simply "different kinds of Thai."
The history of the language reveals a deep connection to neighboring cultures. During the Ayutthaya period, which lasted from 1351 to 1767 A.D., the capital was a bilingual society.
This historical shift resulted in a massive transfer of vocabulary and grammar. Many Khmer elements permeated all aspects of Thai. In the late Ayutthaya period, the language became a thorough mixture of Thai and Khmer. In some cases, there were more Khmer words in use than original Tai words. Thais even used Khmer grammatical rules to create new multi-syllable words and phrases. They also borrowed Khmer expressions and proverbs, adapting them into Thai. This influence extended to the royal vocabulary used in formal settings.
In addition to Khmer, Thai vocabulary is heavily influenced by religious and classical sources. More than half of the Thai vocabulary is derived from or borrowed from Pali and Sanskrit. These languages are closely linked to Theravada Buddhism. The language also incorporates elements from Mon and Old Khmer. When studying the royal vocabulary, known as Rajasap, researchers find that three languages work together: Thai, Khmer, and Khmero-Indic. This shows how different cultural and religious influences merged to expand the Thai lexicon.
Between 1300 and 1600 C.E., the sounds of Thai underwent a major transformation.
