Since then, they have become a purely religious and charitable body. They still exist today and work to help people in Central Europe. They also still give out limited honorary knighthoods to certain people.

The Teutonic Order is a Catholic religious institution with a complex history.

It began as a military society in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Its formal name was the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem. Many people simply call them the Teutonic Knights. They were famous for wearing white surcoats marked with a black cross. Their motto was "Helfen, Wehren, Heilen," which means "Help, Defend, Heal." This motto reflected their three main goals: providing aid, offering protection, and healing the sick.

The Order's functions evolved through several distinct stages. Initially, it served as a hospital brotherhood to care for pilgrims.

In 1191, they managed a hospital in the city of Acre. By 1198, the group transformed into a military order. This change followed the model used by the Knights Templar. They eventually became a ruling power that managed an independent state. This state included territory in Prussia and Livonia. They used military strength to protect Catholic interests and expand their influence.

In the early years, the Order focused on the Holy Land.

German merchants from Bremen and Lübeck founded a field hospital during the Siege of Acre in 1190. In 1192, Pope Clement III recognized the group. They eventually controlled important port tolls in Acre. The Order also held various castles and lordships. These included Montfort Castle, which served as their seat from 1229 to 1271. They also held lands in the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, such as Amouda. These locations helped them control routes between the sea and the interior.

History shows how the Order moved into Eastern Europe. In 1211, they were invited to the Burzenland in Transylvania. They helped defend the borders of the Kingdom of Hungary against the Cumans.

They built wooden and mud forts to protect these areas. However, King Andrew II of Hungary eventually expelled them in 1225. This happened after the Order sought direct authority from Pope Honorius III. The Order then moved to the Prussia region in 1230. They worked with Konrad I of Masovia to conquer and Christianize the area. Through treaties like the Golden Bull of Rimini, they secured the Chełmno Land.

As the Order State grew, it became a significant economic power.

They controlled important port cities and traded with the Hanseatic League. The Order even maintained a naval presence in the Baltic Sea. They built large defensive structures, including churches and hospices. During the rule of Grand Master Hermann von Salza, the Order reached new heights.

Von Salza was a close friend of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. The Emperor named him a "Prince of the Empire." This allowed the Grand Master to negotiate with other high-ranking princes as an equal.

The military power of the Order faced a major decline in the 15th century. In 1410, a Polish-Lithuanian army defeated them at the Battle of Grunwald.

This defeat broke much of their military strength. However, they were not destroyed immediately. They successfully defended their capital during the Siege of Marienburg. Later, in 1525, Grand Master Albert of Brandenburg resigned and converted to Lutheranism. He became the Duke of Prussia as a vassal of Poland. This event led to the loss of many of their holdings.

The modern history of the Order is one of religious service. In 1810, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the dissolution of the Order. This meant they lost their last secular lands and political power. Since then, the Order has been a purely religious and charitable body. They were outlawed by Nazi Germany in 1938 but were re-established in 1945. Today, they operate primarily with charitable aims in Central Europe. They still perform ceremonial duties and confer limited honorary knighthoods.
