Long ago, some men started a group.
Long ago, a group began in a land called Jerusalem.
They started by building a hospital. This helped sick travelers who were on long trips.
Later, the group became a military order. They hired knights to keep people safe. These knights also helped defend their lands.
The group moved to many new places. They lived on the island of Rhodes and in Malta. They even had homes in the Americas.
Today, five groups still follow their old ways. They keep the history of the knights alive.
The Knights Hospitaller were a special group of people.
They began in Jerusalem during the 12th century. At first, they were not soldiers. They were a group that cared for the poor. They also helped sick travelers on long trips.
Later, the group changed. They became a military religious order. This means they were both monks and fighters. They hired knights to keep people safe. These knights also helped defend the Holy Land.
The group moved to many different places over time. They lived in Cyprus and on the island of Rhodes. Later, they moved to Malta. They even held some islands in the Caribbean.
The knights had special symbols. One was a silver cross on a red field. Another was an eight-pointed cross. People often call this the Maltese cross.
Today, five groups still follow these old traditions. They all recognize each other. They keep the history of the knights alive.
The Knights Hospitaller were a very special group of people.
The way the order worked changed over many years. At first, they were mostly healers and monks. They ran a hospital in Jerusalem to help pilgrims. These travelers were often tired, sick, or injured. Eventually, the group began to hire knights for safety. These knights provided armed escorts for the travelers. This helped the group grow into a strong military force. They eventually organized their fighters into ranks like knights and sergeants.
The history of the order begins in the 11th century. Merchants from Amalfi helped start a hospital in Jerusalem. This hospital was dedicated to John the Baptist. In the early 12th century, the group grew much larger. Pope Paschal II officially recognized them in 1113. He issued a special document called a papal bull. This document gave the order protection from the Church. A man named Blessed Gerard was the first head.
The Hospitallers lived in many different places.
You can still see the legacy of the knights today.
The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem is a Catholic military order.
The order's origins lie in the early 11th century. Merchants from Amalfi founded a hospital in Jerusalem. This facility was dedicated to John the Baptist. Benedictine monks worked there to care for sick pilgrims. They also helped the poor and the injured. In the late 1060s, these monks established two separate hospitals. One was for men and one was for women. The men's hospital was known as the Hospital of St John.
Formal recognition came through the Roman Catholic Church. In 1113, Pope Paschal II issued a papal bull called Pie postulatio voluntatis. This document officially recognized the order. It gave the group papal protection. It also exempted their lands from paying tithes. The Pope allowed the brothers to elect their own master. Blessed Gerard was the first head of the hospital. His successor, Raymond du Puy, helped expand the organization. Under Raymond, the original hospice grew into a large infirmary.
The transition to a military force happened gradually. Initially, the Hospitallers simply cared for pilgrims. They soon began providing armed escorts for safety. This was necessary due to the dangers of travel. The order eventually hired professional knights and foot soldiers. By the 1120s and 1130s, the group became fully militarized. They organized their fighting members into two main ranks. These ranks were known as knights and sergeants.
Control of territory was vital to their operations. The Hospitallers managed many important castles. In 1136, King Fulk of Jerusalem gave them the castle of Bethgibelin. This helped protect the route between Jaffa and Jerusalem. They also held the Krak des Chevaliers in 1142. By the year 1180, estimates suggest they held 25 castles. They built new fortifications and repaired old ones. These strongholds allowed them to defend the Holy Land effectively.
The order moved many times as political landscapes changed. They stayed in Jerusalem and Acre until 1291. After the loss of the Holy Land, they moved to Cyprus. They were based at Kolossi Castle from 1302 to 1310. From 1310 to 1522, they ruled the island of Rhodes. In 1530, they moved to Malta. They even held four Caribbean islands in the mid-17th century. Eventually, Napoleon captured Malta in 1798. This event caused the order to disperse across Europe.
Division occurred during the Protestant Reformation. Many wealthy commanderies in northern Germany and the Netherlands became Protestant. These branches separated from the Catholic main stem. However, modern relations between these descendant orders are amicable. Today, five different organizations continue the Hospitaller traditions. They all mutually recognize one another. These include the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. They also include orders from Brandenburg, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
Symbols remain a lasting part of their identity. The order used a plain silver cross on a red field. This was given by Pope Innocent II in 1130. They are also famous for the eight-pointed cross. This symbol likely originated in the Byzantine Empire. When the knights moved to Malta, it became the Maltese cross.
